The students that I am so lucky to teach are second-graders in a historically underserved and culturally diverse PK-5 school located in Northeast Portland. We are an International Baccalaureate (IB) and Mandarin Immersion school with numerous learning opportunities for our students. The diversity, warmth, and history of this community and school are what make this place so incredible to be a part of. Learning is happening in and out of our classrooms, every single day.
Our students are caring, creative, and so enthusiastic about learning.
Every student has a story to tell and every student is such an important part of our classroom community. They ask questions, they help each other, they challenge each other, and they grow with each other.
We always celebrate the little moments just as much as the big ones and we are thoughtful about how we can support one another.
My Project
Our school is located in Portland, Oregon, so that means there are usually more rainy days than there are dry days. Although we want our kids outside to get some fresh air during recess time, our playground does not have any covered areas, so the students have to spend those break times in our classroom instead.
When indoors for recess, I want my kids to be able to stay curious, get creative, and collaborate with their peers while still having fun!
The items that I am hoping to gather will include materials for art projects, puzzle making, building, and board games. Recesses may be short, but they are still a time for our kids to learn and build relationships with one another. These materials will contribute to that, and more, throughout the school year!
