A group called "Poverty and the Arts" used this quote on their site: “If there is no friendship with the poor and no sharing of the life of the poor, then there is no authentic commitment to liberation, because love exists only among equals.” – Father Gustavo Gutiérrez, ‘In the Company of the Poor’
My students come from an area of South Dakota where there is a lot of poverty.
Their situations are hard. They need friends and role models, who will join in the ups and downs of their lives. My third grade students are creative and fun! Their personalities keep things really moving day to day. Sometimes, though, they struggle to find a way to communicate what they can't find a way to say.
My Project
Through the donation of these art supplies, my students will gain a new mode of communication of emotions and of themselves. They will be able to express a side of themselves, they never have before. They will not only have a new tool for expression and relief of struggles, but will also gain an appreciation for fine art. My students will discover skills and talents that they didn't know they had before, through learning techniques and styles like shading, still-life, portraits, overlapping, and so much more. Students will also have an opportunity to study artists and create art using the same mediums and styles as those artists.
My students will be so greatly affected by this project.
They will have a door of opportunity opened to them, that they haven't had before. My students would be able to concentrate better on other subjects, express themselves better to others, and escape the stresses of their home lives, even if just for a bit. This project will change my students lives in so many ways.
