Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have students 100 from 9th to 12th grade. Many of them come from low-income families that do not have many opportunities to travel and have much difficulty in seeing the importance of a new language. Last year, we begin the project to immerse students completely in Spanish. We begin introducing them to hearing the language and the words using Rosetta Stone. I was able to buy two copies for the classroom. My students love to use technology; and as teacher, I am trying to offer them the best of the two worlds, technology, and visual arts.
Art is good for the soul and lets the student express their inner sentiments in their work.
In addition, technology lets the students understand and fly to places they have never seen. With virtual travels and classroom art, they can fly high in their lives.
My Project
I believe art can increase the acquisition of a new language. With pictures and drawings, students can recall previous learning of concepts and make the association, the patterns and the definition for the new language. Students draw and color concepts to be able to remember this easily. But not everyone has the opportunity to buy color pencils, glue, color paper, marker, earphones, and other art materials. According to the American for Arts (2015), arts are essential. For me, “Arts teaches the path to the same conclusion in a different form". We need people who express their feelings differently than others.”
With these art materials, everyone in the classroom will have the opportunity to express their feelings, to hear the Spanish words that help them express their thoughts and to create with tools to color, draw and show their capabilities in Art.
Art teaches students innumerable lessons, makes small differences that can have large effects, and leads to creativity. Arts reinforce the language because arts it is a language itself.
