My students are 7th and 8th graders who are working hard to make our school a better place. They are energized by being able to work with teachers and student groups to make our school building more appealing while raising other students' self-esteem at the same time.
This project idea was developed by another teacher on our campus who asked my students to volunteer to help make the project idea a reality. Their goal is to be able to let students express themselves artistically in several different ways, including artistic work, music, and poetry readings.
Through participation in this project, students are being provided an educational environment that allows them to gain insight into their own abilities to acquire and use information, solve problems and develop valuable experience.
My students are working on re-working the atrium area of our school building that is current very bare. They are working with an English teacher and an art teacher to make this area more inviting and more functional. They are working with the English teacher to create a stage area for poetry slams and readers' theaters to be performed. They are working with the art teacher to have displays for student artwork. The hooks and the ceiling mounts will be used to create the displays for the artwork.
The donations received for this project will help these students obtain what they are needing for the art display for the atrium area. This group of 4 students have worked tirelessly throughout the year with each other to create a plan for this area. They have their disagreements, but they end up using teamwork to figure out solutions to the problems they encounter.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to create a display area for art work created by students in our building. Our art program creates many great pieces, but display is currently limited to our art classroom. By having an art display in the atrium area of our school, the creativity of these students will be seen by many students, teachers, administrators, and even parents.
Our teacher gives us room to be leaders by letting us make decisions for our project. We contact possible community partners, figure out measurements and costs for needed materials, and talk to other teachers who may also be involved in our project. We have taken a leadership role by writing several grants to help fund our project, as well as finding the materials needed.
This project will help our school because students who may not be extraverts will be able to express themselves artistically. Also, for many students, art is their outlet for feelings and problems they may be having. Art takes the place of technology, sports, and other clubs or activities that some students simply aren't interested in. Other students have their work displayed in competitions and awards ceremonies. This is a way for our art students to be acknowledged. This could also be used for art shows, which could eventually lead to jobs in the art field.
