Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Pre-K Students come from culturally diverse backgrounds and live in an Urban area of NJ. Many students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program, which means they live below or near the poverty level. The best thing about my students is they don't know or care about any of the information mentioned above. They come to school each day ready and the willingness to learn. Many of my students are typically developing students, but I also teach and bring art experiences to many students with special needs. Some special needs students are included into regular classrooms, 50/50 classrooms, as well as self contained classrooms.
I love how excited my three to five-year-old students become when they are given the opportunity to create and experience a new art project, they are so appreciative and eager to encounter new things.
My Project
While I have most of the supplies needed for most of the lessons I plan to teach this school year with my typical pre-k students, it is helpful to have another set of materials for my students with special needs. I teach in over 25 pre-k classrooms each week. Some classes have students with special needs included, some are 50/50 classrooms and some are self-contained special education pre-k classrooms with students with diverse ability levels. I like to provide all my students with similar art experiences at their level with materials that are appropriate for every child.
I will use easy grip scissors, chunky beads, glue, messy mats, and play-doh to use with special needs students because these materials pose less of a safety risk to them or others.
All my students love and deserve to experience creating art with a variety of art materials. with these materials, my included students will get to have the same experiences as their peers.
