Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a low income community. My students do not get to see art in museums, they never take after school art classes, and would not be exposed to visual arts if I didn't teach them about artists and art mediums. I teach art by integrating it into history, geography, and social studies.
Our community is made up of a variety of children, the majority are of Hispanic ethnic cultures.
Many of them are low income and school time is their "special" place where they can experience learning in a positive and safe environment. I co-teach art while my partners teach music and science. All together we teach 75 children and we also take in the Special Day Class students to help them integrate into a general education environment. The children attend Art, Social ,and History with me weekly. I also take in students from three other teachers and together we "Team Teach" 75 children. Over 3/4 of these children are Second Language learners and ten of them are from the Special Day Class.
My Project
My students will grow both emotionally and educationally by experiencing art in the classroom. They will learn to use a variety of art skills and see their own portfolios be created as they paint and draw examples of art. I will be able to use high quality materials to teach them unlike the materials which we are presently trying to use. I am requesting watercolors, paint brushes (of various sizes), and oil pastels to create a variety of art projects. I will also teach blending, the color wheel, contrasting colors, and other basic skills related to color. The students will use these materials weekly as they create still life drawings, landscapes of our community, and portraits of themselves. Each week, a different lesson will integrate Social Studies and History into the structure of the art lesson. Children will then have an opportunity to use the paints, pastels, and brushes to create a piece of art. The art work will be compiled into a portfolio which will be shared with families.
Please help support the arts curriculum in which I want to expose my students.
Your support will give these deserving children quality materials to have success in the arts! I will be able to help them learn about a variety of art styles, teach them to express themselves artistically, and help them learn to work with others as they share materials and lessons. They will also learn English speaking skills as they share their project with other classes and their families.
