Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Living in a primarily low-income, high poverty city, my students have very limited access to college- and career-ready opportunities valuable in today's fast-paced society. Our school, for that reason, is doing its best to prepare students for the demands of the 21st century. I know though that we, the faculty, can do more.
My students are curious, critical thinkers, and creative; they're not just consumers, but are also creators of knowledge.
They just need the chance to showcase what they can do, and I am more than confident to believe that they can overcome all obstacles thrown at them. In a few years, I see them as agents of change themselves, dutifully contributing their share towards the betterment of society.
My Project
I believe that, in today's tech-dependent world, it is important for students not only to be able to read, write, and perform arithmetic, but also to develop algorithms. This is why I have recently re-introduced computer science in our school last year (it was not offered in several years prior). So far, we've only had one CS section in each year, and I am trying to generate more interest for the subject as technology has become a ubiquitous part of our everyday lives.
In my CS Principles class, I incorporate Logo programming, in addition to App Inventor 2, to teach students how to write codes and functions; Mirobots will make the learning experience more interactive.
One of the projects I assign is to create an artwork created solely using their programming skills. Last year, I ended up printing them myself after we took screenshots of their work (see https://goo.gl/q92Wcq). With Mirobots, the students can see for themselves their artwork being drawn. In addition, the robots can be utilized in Geometry for geometric constructions.
