Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Chicago Public School in a neighborhood that serves 351 Pre-K through 8th grade students. Many of our families are low income and speak another language, and we also have diverse learners as well as a deaf and hard of hearing population. The art room is a safe place for these children to tell their stories. They learn to express themselves and to think creatively in a classroom where many of the lessons have a theme of tolerance, peace, and embracing diversity. Our school is dual language PK-2nd grade so students are learning through english and Spanish, even in the art classroom! We have also become a STEAM school, and are working to integrate art in all subjects school wide. They are so excited to finally have visual art back at their school, and absolutely love coming to art class!
My Project
This is the first year in TWO years our students have had art. Many of them are begging to come in during their lunch for extra art time. I would love to have both a lunch time and after school art club, but being a new program we ordered bare essentials this year.
These are materials we unable to purchase with the launch of our art program, but would bring a true art club to life!
Students can use permanent markers to draw and create batik dyed fabrics, they will be able to use acrylic paint on real artist canvases not just paper, and strainer will help keep our paint cups clean and dry between use.
They will have a variety of beads available to create jewelry, and can explore painting/drawing with india ink large scale with daubers. They can experiment with color when working with chalk pastels to create blended drawings, and we can recycle paper to create our own with paper making screens!
