I am a first year Art teacher in North Carolina and it has been an amazing journey working at Nash Central Middle School. I have given my students opportunities to show their work throughout the school as well as in the community. My students have won prizes, have their work hung in the local organizations, and have been commissioned to do work for the administrative department. My colleagues have commented on how they have seen an improvement in behavior from the Art students. Consequently, I felt that the next step in helping my school community become a more positive one was to start an after school Art Club program. Nash Central Middle School is a school located in Nash County, North Carolina and houses 6th - 8th grade students. Our student body consists of 63% African American, 36% Caucasian, and 1% students from other cultures. The majority of students at Nash Central Middle School are “at-risk”. This denotes that they are susceptible to dropping out by the age of 16. As of this year, our students have been required to wear uniforms. The uniform policy was established as a security measure to ensure student safety from gang related issues. Students at Nash Central Middle School who sign up for Art class only have it for one semester, and students who take band are not permitted to take Art at all. Art Club is an after school program that is open to ALL students who are interested in Art, either to be exposed to it for the first time or to continue to have it in their lives. The Art Club program has twenty members who range in age and talent. The school system has pronounced Art as being a course that is not required for the curriculum nor do the students have to pass it when they are enrolled. For this reason, some projects are not appropriate for the classroom due to classroom sizes and student's approach towards art. Therefore, Art club allows students to create more intense work while still learning the basic tools for understanding and appreciating art. Materials would include but are not limited to paper, markers, different types of paint, metal, and other sculptural supplies. I really believe this program creates a positive environment, is helping the student community better appreciate art and is helping the members discover the internal rewards of completing a task.
