This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with groups of 2nd - 8th grade students who are exceptionally talented in the visual arts. My school is located in an extremely high-need community and many of my students come from a background of extreme urban poverty in Southeast Louisiana.
We face a unique set of challenges here in our beautiful, but troubled, city (from hurricanes to oil spills to political corruption and back again).
These kids deserve a break every once and awhile... and I'm determined to see to it that they have some fun while exploring their creative potential.
The Talented Arts program is one of the bright spots in my students lives. My program is designed to provide these exceptional children with an opportunity to develop their natural creative skills and talents while exploring the connections between art and other core subjects.
The time my students spend with me working on hands-on art projects is one of the rare chances they are given to truly succeed, be appreciated and respected, and be part of a team. The success that they experience working on exciting "outside the box" creative projects in my classroom has the potential to ripple through the rest of their lives.
My Project
Its the start of a new school year and I have lots of amazing art projects planned. However, we have a major problem... the airconditioning is broken in the wing of the building that houses my classroom! In Southeast Louisiana (from August thru October and from April thru June) this is a critical issue! My Talented Arts classroom is in the old greenroom inside of the theater, and even when the AC is working it still gets pretty hot in here. With the AC out in the theater it is unbearable in here.
The administration is working on getting the AC fixed, but there is no guarantee that it will be functioning any time soon (or even during this school year). A better solution is get a portable AC unit specifically for my room.

We work on big, crazy, messy, REAL art projects in my class. We need to be able to create without worrying about making a mess (this is why I don't want to just move my class to the library).
