Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have a difficult time writing legible, which can be a disadvantage, especially if the skills are not learned early on. Some children have arrived in America without knowing a word of English, and have absolutely no handwriting skills. However...they are motivated and quick learners!
I teach Art at a Florida Title I school that is 100 % poverty.
My students have a hard time writing legibly. If they can't write they will not be able to take notes for themselves, no less in a doctor's office when translating for their parents. They would be unable to write down street directions, or even write a thank you note to a friend. There are hundreds of of reasons to jot down a message, but this is difficult for many of my students.
Not all children have access to computers and mobile devices to compensate for their lack of penmanship. Every student should be able to communicate clearly and legibly by writing.
My Project
I envision students breaking into small groups taking turns visiting the mobile Learn to Draw Book cart. They will be super excited when they see the large selection of books. This will allow my students to select the Learn How to Draw book that most interests them. Lions, Tigers, People, Funny Monsters, you name it, and spend time independently drawing, instilling a love for Art.
Having a mobile cart with a wonderful and varied selection of books will enable my students to learn the fundamentals of following step by step "learn to draw" directions, while building self confidence in Art.
A mobile cart will allow me to move the cart easily to other areas of the room as needed.
The Learn How to Draw books will be used throughout the school year by all my Art students grades K-5 and will reinforce the principles of art and design taught in my class. Exposing students to a wide variety of subject matter to draw will allow students to expand and grow. The paper will be cut in half and used to draw, and the disinfectant products will be used to wipe everything down each afternoon.
