This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are not stopped by poverty. Though they live in the Arkansas Delta and many have never left the town they live in, they are hungry for information and eager to create in my art room.
My students are part of a rural farming community where approximately 98% of them receive free or reduced-price lunch.
They live in poverty but do not allow that to define them. These students are creative, innovative, and energetic! Nothing can hold them back, and I want to make sure they have everything they need to succeed in the art classroom.
My Project
My students love to work in my choice-based art classroom. Since students can choose what they want to work on, they often look for inspiration around them in my classroom. For a long time, I have bought books on sale with my own personal money to help inspire students.
My students would love an expanded library to help them develop ideas and draw inspiration from different sources.
Students love the drawing books that I have in my classroom already. I have watched students lay out books and combine different ideas from multiple drawing books, edit ideas they saw in LEGO books to make something of their own, and dive in to art history after seeing something that excited them in a book. Books are so important in my classroom, and my students would love to have more!
