My students need a book display and books to enhance their learning about art and love of reading, including books about shapes and colors, multicultural books, and more.
My students are excited to come to art every week and work on their projects. Our art room motto is "if you make a mistake, make it great!" and I often hear students encouraging their classmates with the reminder.
I teach about 475 students in PreKindergarten-3rd grade.
We tend to have a very positive atmosphere at school even with struggles students are sometimes facing at home. Nearly 65% of the students in my Title 1 school qualify for free and reduced lunch but whenever the school is raising money for charity or collecting food for the local food bank, the generosity shown by our families is amazing.
My Project
The students often ask to read if there is a little extra time at the end of a class. The problem is that most of the books in our art room library are hand me downs of hand me downs and are hard to see and organize on the old metal shelf. Aside from the few new books I try to purchase every year and have shared from my personal collection, the majority of our books have been, well, let's say "well-loved" and picked up from discard piles. Many have torn or missing pages and are not really related to art at all. I would love to share books with my students that will better support their learning in art and help them develop a love of reading.
It is every teacher's responsibility to help instill a love of reading.
Picture books especially can help struggling learners and students with English as a second language. The wonderful gift of new books would enrich my students' learning in the art room and love of reading, which will serve them for a lifetime.
