I am a current teacher in BCPS. I teach students whose first language is not English. These students come from all areas of the world and are some of the best scholars out there. Not only are they learning a new language (English) but a lot of them are learning to live in a new country and culture. Often times, because of the language barriers, my scholars find it hard to make new friends and feel a sense of belonging. And because of the language barrier, they often struggle to communicate how they feel. Imagine being a young scholar and not having the language to make new friends, understand your teachers, etc. I would be overwhelmed so I can only imagine the stress these young students face every day. However, despite these challenges, my students show up everyday ready to do the hard work needed to be successful.
I would like to give my students alternative ways to express themselves, their thoughts and their emotions.
And what better way then through art. I am hoping to create an art corner in my classroom where students can come when they are feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, and stressed. In this corner, there will be beautiful art supplies and books where students can take a moment and destress, and express themselves through beautiful colors and art work.
A lot of my students are talented budding artists but lack the resources needed to purchase art supplies. This corner would provide those supplies to them while helping them to feel at home in their new surroundings.
