Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It has been another year where I was fortunate enough to get a great bunch of students. They are a group of 28 second graders that are intuitive, motivated, hardworking, and eager to learn. I recently noticed something though and that was that most if not all of my students do not visit art museums with their parents. As a result they are not aware of the different styles of art or of famous artists. I would like to be able to teach my students about famous artists and also be able to have resources available to me so that I can learn about how to teach art. More privileged children visit museums on a frequent basis so that they learn about art work early on. I want my students to have the same opportunity. I want my students to be educated so that they are able to identify artwork by Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, etc. This year they have no art teacher. My preparation coverages include gym, music and literacy. It is for this reason that I am asking for art books so that I gain additional knowledge about art and how to teach art to my students.
Additionally, every year as part of our Rigby reading curriculum we teach students about how to make masks. Some of the masks that students are supposed to make are painted and others are require weaving. It is for this reason that I also wanted some masks for students to decorate for the culminating activity when we finish reading How To Make Masks. The weaving loom is so that students can practice their weaving craft for the mask making and also to learn an art craft.
