My students need a variety of art medium to expand their ability to express themselves in different modalities. The requested supplies will enable the children to go directly to an organized and well stocked art center.
Imagine coming to school and having very little language, and having the extreme desire to communicate to those in your world. My students are all students with the classification of preschool disabled, however they all struggle in the area of communication, comprehension and being able to process language to both use it and to understand it.
Either childhood cancer, birth trauma or emotional challenges impact the ability for these children to express themselves verbally.
Art provides an additional venue for expression.
When art activities are thoughtfully planned with clear objectives in mind, they can be an enriching part of the preschool day that actually enhances academic learning. Through art opportunities, children gain fine motor skills by using scissors, paintbrushes and other art tools. This grant will provide brushes, paint, glue, chenille stems, wiggly eyes, cardstock paper, playdough, paint and tissue paper along with storage and organizational materials. A well supplied art center that is easily accessible to students will encourage creating, exploring, and unlimited opportunities to express themselves through art.
My Project
If this project is funded a well organized and well stocked art center will be a focal point in the disabled preschool classroom. The children will have a variety of mediums to select from to express their imagination, creativity and knowledge.
Students love to be actively involved in their learning.
An art center enables students to make choices, create and be individuals in the process of their own learning.
The materials that have been requested will empower students to use the arts as a means of personal expression. Students with special needs do best when they are learning kinesthetically. An art center will provide kinesthetic learning experiences.
My students think creatively and due to budget constraints and the fact that this class is new and had to be fully equipped, our art supplies have been limited. I have been purchasing materials on my own. The tissues paper, watercolors and brushes and watercolor paper will allow for paper and painting based creations. The glue, glitter, glue smoothers and wiggly eyes will provide opportunities for specific animal and creature creations. The organizational items and storage shelf will provide a neat and orderly way for the art center to be organized and easily accessible. Playdough is used daily for creative imagination as well as to improve fine motor skills. These materials, if funded, will provide a variety of materials to be readily available as the students develop their art, fine motor and creative skills.
