As the art teacher at Waccamaw Middle School, I have seen students enter the program with trepidations and, within a week, transform their feelings of inadequacy into phenomenal signs of self confidence. My students win the top honors yearly in art shows. Challenged on a higher level, they realize no limitations other than public funding for supplies which are expensive and consumable. Monthly, we run out of colored pencils even. In art, students use divergent thinking skills (where there is no right nor wrong answer) - problem solving skills necessary in all curricular areas and future professions - as opposed to convergent skills where a right answer must be learned or memorized. I love my students, work late hours at home nightly for them, and since they accept my challenges, I constantly strive to give them the best I can. Without basic art supplies, all of our efforts are in vain. Those problem solving skills can not be nurtured. The students suffer. In art, students who have discipline problems (or are less fortunate than some) succeed. I teach them that we each have our own style, and all styles are good. The success achieved in art tells the student with low self esteem that he / she is capable of achieving with effort. In advance, I thank you from the heart.
