Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the opportunity to support and inspire sixty students who come to school every day with the hope of learning not just about academics but also about themselves. All of my students have a native language that is not English, and they work very hard every day to learn a second language.
My English Language Learners' overall learning styles vary greatly.
Some of my students read and write fluently in their native language and/or English while others come in with very limited literacy skills and require creative approaches for their transition to the English language.
My Project
Art integration starts with the aspiration to see students more engaged and excited about learning! The research shows that bringing art concepts into the math classroom not only benefits engagement levels, but aids in constructing a deeper understanding of math concepts. Some of the most basic art principles like balance, proportion, and variety, and concepts like line, space, and shape can be found in math equations and story problems.
Students use art skills when finding math solutions, and math concepts when creating art.
Recently our school became a fine arts school and we have been learning how to incorporate more fine arts across our curriculum. We are so excited to use art concepts to either enhance a lesson or use the integration in our chapter end units. My students love to draw, create, paint, and use glitter on just about anything!
The glitter, tag board, colored pencils, and wiggle eyes will be a great start to exploring art in math class. The small but decorative items will be a game changer! My students will love the use of the colored pencils and square colored papers (hello Geometry projects) and I know this will open a whole new chapter of imagination and their love of math!
