Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I travel between two Title I schools in my district, bringing art to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Our students are predominately from Hispanic families. Our schools are located in a heavily agricultural city. We serve many low income families who work in the fields picking produce or also in one of the factories in our city.
Our schools are striving to break the cycle of poverty and provide our students with more opportunities.
Art has the special ability to transform learning. Students are excited to learn about artists, artwork, and artistic techniques. There is immense talent in my classes and I want to enrich the learning experience while students are creating.
My Project
I would love to read more with my students to support their overall academic growth. Having class sets of these three titles that focus on three different artists will greatly impact my students' learning. Currently I do not have any class sets for my students to read. My goal is to support my students' literacy growth and development by increasing my classroom library and sharing my love for reading.
These books will help my students' depth of knowledge in regard to art and the lives of these three impactful artists.
The books I have chosen focus on the lives and artistic impact left by Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, and Frida Kahlo. As an art teacher I want to be able to model a love of reading and offer opportunities for students to read even in an art class. By reading these books together, my students will gain a greater understanding of these artists and the art movements they are apart of. Reading these books together will also create more dynamic project opportunities where students can create artwork in response to the text.
