This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every morning before class, I lead my students in reciting the following mission statement: "we are a community of learners and leaders launching legacies that will uplift the world." My students have grown to embody this mission in every way. They are a group of dynamic scholars who are eager to learn and manage to do exceptionally well despite the lack of educational resources available in our district.
My students live in a high-poverty area consistently impacted by the threat of flooding.
2 years ago, a historic flood displaced my students and destroyed months of learning progress. Nevertheless, students returned to school filled with resilience and ingenuity; because that is what they do- take their lemons and make lemonade.
My Project
My students' understanding of the world is largely shaped by the communities they live in. While this can cultivate characteristics such as pride and loyalty, it can also produce fixed mindsets and partialized views.
The majority of my students will never know the privilege of having a stamped passport.
Reading provides an outlet for students to explore worlds that are vastly different from their own. Each time a student reads about child soldiers in Sudan or basketball players in Harlem or girls growing up in Mexico, it opens their minds up to new understandings and greater possibilities.
My students need a classroom library filled with books that represent diverse countries and characters. By funding our project, you are acting as a passport through which students can travel the world without ever leaving our classroom. Bon Voyage!
