My students need 25 copies of Scholastic News to effectvely evaluate nonfiction arguments weekly!

I teach in a low income urban area in Chicago's Southeast side where many of my students lack the resources needed to be successful in academia. Depsite their financial needs, they are hungry for knowledge and guidance. It brings me joy to encourage, inspire, and educate these particular students based on their own personal struggles outside of school.
My students have grit, they are motivated to learn and put in the hard work it takes to become educated!
My students enjoy learning new information especially when its relates to thier own lives. They are challenged daily with making good choices, they can effectively determine right from wrong and make informed decisions in a structured way. My goal is to build on this skill and nurture informed students using current events.
Students will be asked to evaluate arguments on a weekly basis and would have to develop strong persuasive strategies to influence others. I have dessigned lessons to assist them with this skill but I need assistance with the type of media students will utilize to present their evaluations.
A subscription to "Scholastic News" will make a difference in my students learning because my school currently does not have textbooks for reading or hisotry. These articles will provide each student their own article that they can use to learn interesting facts about science, history, and world issues.
Scholastic News will be helpful for me, because I can teach them how to identify the author's purpose and use textual evidence to prove it.
My students will be able to build long lasting vocabulary skills, improve reading stamina, and finally evaluate the article for its validity, biasness, and whether they agree with the information. Students will have a weekly essay to write as a result of reading new information to prove comprehension. My students will become engaged citizens as a resuolt of reading from the Scholastic News.
