My students need hands on manipulates to increase their understanding when finding the area of polygons & to help visualize the surface area & volume of solids.
The students I have the privilege of working with have various learning differences. Our classroom is a Co-Taught Special Education classroom with a General Education Teacher, Special Education teacher, and teaching assistants. As grade level with 61 students with learning needs that vary greatly. Our school is 100 years old! It is in a small village community. Our students arrive every day eager to learn and explore the journey of knowledge.
While our school community is small, the diverse backgrounds of our learning students is large!
My Project
6th-grade math concepts are challenging. Having manipulates that students can use to help solidify understanding of concepts that are difficult to visualize.
Many of our students have a difficult time visualizing solid figures when they can't see & touch all sides or faces of the shape.
Visualizing a solid base on a 2 or 3-dimensional illustration on a worksheet or textbook picture is difficult for learners.
Learning challenges make it even more important to reinforce the concrete-pictorial connection. Providing students hands-on activities and learning opportunities that allow them to fold
nets into solids, break solids into net and being able to touch all sides of a polygon when finding area are extremely helpful.
