This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students just love to create and explore using art techniques. They really look forward to attending my art class each week. We are a culturally diverse school with students from over 20 different countries represented. We look for creative and engaging opportunities for our school.
Here, we turn our "Mistakes into Masterpieces." We have a very welcoming atmosphere at this school with murals and quotes throughout our hallways.
As a Title I school, we are a low income and high poverty/needs school. Our school is a neighborhood school which is located in a low socioeconomic zone of urban North Carolina. Each child at our school receives free breakfast and lunch through our nutrition program. In addition to breakfast and lunch, they also each also receive a healthy snack of fresh fruits or vegetables each day.
My Project
When I began teaching art, I had no idea that I would be using math in my lessons. This was a real eye opener for me. Low and behold, there I was as a new teacher that didn't like math ("because I was confused and didn't get it"), using math to teach art.
This project will provide me the opportunity to aide my students in seeing the relationship between math and visual art.
I want to help reinforce their learning from the regular classroom and offer support from my art room. Using the Montessori learning activities will definitely offer that support to the student. With these manipulatives my students will be able to learn about the relationships between 2D and 3D shapes.
These resources are going to allow the students to see art and math from a new angle. Ultimately, I want that student that may be confused like I was to break through that fear and come into appreciating math and knowing that it is all around us.
