Everyone benefits from a break! Recess is a break from structure and expectations, children have an opportunity to take control of their world, which is a rarity in their lives.
My students are an energetic group of 19 Kindergarten students in a low income district.
They have varying abilities in and out of the classroom. I am trying to enhance our time spent outside, as well as, my students gross motor and social skills. Recess may be the only time many of my students get to play outside during the week.
My Project
My students LOVE to go outside for recess. Everyday the children ask if we can go outside for recess. As long as weather permits, I take my class outside on the blacktop playground. The playground balls, hula hoops, jump ropes, balancing buckets and sand table supplies will greatly benefit their gross motor and social skills.
Recess is so important because physical activity feeds the brain.
Most of the brain is activated during physical activity much more so than when doing seatwork. Studies have shown that students who are physically active have improved academic performance, achieve higher test scores, and demonstrate a better attitude toward school.
