My students need a large cage, food, vitamin drops, how-to book, water bottle, feeding dishes, and brushes to ensure our class pet has a happy and healthy life.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Are you accepting animals?" I should have known not to walk into the office that second day of school. A student's mom was waiting there hoping to donate her bunny (a grandparent's gift that wasn't well-thought out) to the science lab. After a short conversation, Penny was to stay with us.
The students at my school are inner city children who are very curious and loving, but don't always have the support at home they need in order to thrive.
They love to learn, want to succeed, and depend on their teachers to provide them with the stability and opportunities a child should have.
I've tried to make my science classroom look as much like a lab as possible. I have animals, books, microscopes, tools, posters, and learning opportunities surrounding the students. The students know they will experience science in my classroom and are excited to come to class.
My Project
They know my love for animals so much that they bring in praying mantises, birds nests, small creatures they find, and even sometimes pets. Their parents know if I take in a pet it is given a loving forever home.
The rabbit supplies, larger cage, food, and guide will help my students take care of Penny (our newly donated bunny) and give him a loving home in our classroom. They will learn how to take care of a rabbit, how to be kind to animals, and how to love.
Penny the rabbit came with a cage, but it's too small for someone his size.
By donating to this project, I won't have to go into my own pocket to buy a larger cage and essential supplies. I can instead use that money on other projects throughout the year.
