My Students

I teach in a low-income, very small city surrounded by Detroit, where students' needs extend beyond learning to read. In addition to feeding hungry bellies breakfast, lunch and snack, we feed them love, acceptance, social skills and positive behavior with a hands-on, student-led education! Our district is one of the poorest in the nation, and we struggle to come up with furniture and "extras."

I have the best students!

Our school is very diverse, containing mostly Bengali, African-American, Yemeni, White, Polish and Bosnian children, many of whom do not speak English at home. They are creative, loving and enthusiastic hard workers!

My Project

Cursive, some say, is a dying skill. Cursive is no longer a requirement in schools, and many students graduate without ever learning it! Cursive is still a necessary skill for signatures, check-writing, reading important documents and more. The assumption is that students will learn cursive at home, an assumption that has been proven year after year to be wrong, as each year students come to fifth grade without being able to even write their name.

Please help me purchase cursive handwriting workbooks for my students to learn this dying "language"!

My students have expressed interest in learning cursive, and I would like to make it a part of their "choices" time daily. Please help me supply them with the tools they need to learn!
