My students live in a very rural area in South Carolina. More than eighty percent of students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Many come from homes without air conditioning and depend on the school bus to get them to from home to school because their family doesn't own a vehicle. Books, digital devices, and other educational materials are considered luxuries to many of these students.
No matter what challenges they may be facing at home, my students come to school ready to learn and gain new experiences!
They love working on STEM activities, sharing facts from nonfiction books, and keeping up with the latest fiction series. They are well versed in technology and enjoy learning new apps and programs to show off their learning.
My Project
I LOVE when my students ask for specific titles, but I don't like telling them I don't have the book they'd like to check out. Popular series, such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, and Goosebumps, seem to always be checked out. Books in these series have had up to 650 circulations per copy in the last five years!
Having additional copies will allow more students to access these favorites.
It will also prevent students from having to wait so long for the next book in the series. I want my students to have what they are looking for at the time they are looking for it.
