Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Text and graphics on a screen, while rewarding after struggling with a difficult problem, are not very exciting. Robots and cars, however are. My students have studied and learned to program, now it's time for them to apply that knowledge.
We are a very diverse urban district with many motivated students.
A large percentage of my students have begun to develop an interest in pursuing careers in STEM and this class will hopefully continue to push more in that direction. Most of my students have never taken a programming course before and for many of them this is the first AP class they will take.
My Project
My students need Arduinos, car chassis and supporting hardware to build and program autonomous cars. My students will use the kits to build, program and test autonomous vehicles. This will give them the opportunity to program, debug, and refine their code to accomplish a real-world task. They will program the cars to navigate through a complex obstacle course and compete against each other for the best time.
This project will provide my students an opportunity to truly apply what they have learned to a real-world situation.
Too often in AP class we get caught up in teaching to the test, and miss out on opportunities to teach students skills that are just as important for the test and for future classes they may take. This project will not only have reinforce topics we've covered, but also prepare my students for engineering or computer science studies in college
