I am a fourth grade teacher at P.S. 104 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. 51% of the students in our school receive free lunch. 11% of the student population speaks English as a second language. I have 31 students who are absolutely wild about hands-on science. They have also done lots of reading about sea animals in our daily small group instruction in guided reading. Most of these children have not had the opportunity to experience marine wildlife up close. The students have been under some pressure because of the all-important State Fourth grade English Language Arts test. I think a trip to the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn would be a wonderful experience for them. The sea lion exhibition is particularly relevant to them because we have read about them various books during guided reading and shared reading. The New York Aquarium is just the place for us to see and experience what we have been learning about in class.
