Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title One school in Las Vegas and the school's mission is to prepare students to be global citizens and have a competitive edge in the 21st century workforce. I am a science teacher who provides unique classes such as medicine, Forensics, and Marine Science. My students often encounter a numerous challenges and continue to be successful beyond their various hardships. Since many of my students never venture out of our city or state, I want to expose them to a world of various opportunities and professional paths.
My students enjoy learning about science through engaging hands-on activities and real world connections.
My goal is to inspire my students for the college and career world by providing them with unique and creative experiences. My hope is my students will join the science industry that will support the world and humankind.
My Project
These materials will be used in Marine Science classes for students to understand the benefits of ancient Aquaponics. Students will learn how the nitrogen cycle promotes plant growth from fish poop. The ammonia from the fish waste builds up and beneficial bacteria converts the waste into nitrite and nitrate. These compounds become food for plants. Eventually, the system becomes self-sustaining because the fish feed on the plant's roots and the nitrogen cycle supports the plants. Once vegetables, such as tomatoes and green peppers grow from our Aquaponics system, students will donate food to our families or sell for funding field trips.
