Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Until recently there was no reason for intensive development of fish farming techniques. There were abundant supplies of fishes and shellfishes from natural sources. World population growth and pollution oceans, lakes and rivers have resulted in a need for exploration of aquaculture!
I teach in a semi-rural community where farming is the primary income source for many.
We have a large migrant population and for many of my students come from a low socio-economic status. I also have a high number of English Language Learners so "doing" is more effective than listening.
My Project
Students will learn about one of the fastest growing food industries in America. My students will have an chance to learn an understanding of nutritional, environmental and financial factors involved in aquaculture industry. Chemistry skills will also be incorporated since students will be responsible for finding the correct balance of pH, nitrates, phosphates and carbon dioxide to have successful aquaculture.
Students will also benefit from learning responsibility, team work and problem solving.
It is imperative that I make education relevant and hand on for my students and this grant would provide both!
