I am a full-time physical education teacher at Aptos Middle School. My average class size is 45 students and I teach 5 classes a day to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The majority of our students are from a low socio-economic background. Many of our students suffer from childhood obesity. I have created a fitness room that includes weights, bikes and exercise equipment. The majority of the equipment has been donated but all of it is old and rusty. I would like to request a quality treadmill for our fitness room. It will be used by all 957 students in the school. We are in desperate need of a weight rack with free weights. This will increase the quality of our instruction as physical educators and the students will ultimately reap the benefits by becoming healthier, happier and stronger. As a physical educator, fitness is my number one goal, however, our facilities and equipment are sub par. Childhood obesity has become a sad epidemic and is virtually irreversible. I want to change the value system of these students so they appreciate and enjoy physical activity to make it a part of their daily lives.
