APS CLL Grow. Lead. Transform. Mini-Grant Hats Off to Thinking!
Help me give my students rich fiction and nonfiction literature to promote and develop higher reading achievement; stimulate interest in and enjoyment of reading; and improve self-regulation and automaticity in reading.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
APS CLL Grow. Lead. Transform. Mini-Grants HATS OFF TO THINKING! My global citizens are the future movers and shakers of the world! When I come to their classrooms, the G.A.T.E. (Gifted and Talented Education) students are filled with excitement and anticipation because they have to be ready to think outside of the box by using creative and critical thinking, advanced research and advanced communication.
My students have many special gifts to offer that are so awe-inspiring!
These special gifts need to be nurtured with rich and challenging fiction and nonfiction literature to increase their Lexile levels. The majority of my students’ Lexile Levels range from two to four years above their grade level. When selecting appropriate, yet challenging books, my students have a difficult time because the literature is scarce.
My Project
I would use the book, "Patina" as a book hook to entice students to read it and other books the same way as movie trailers entice people to watch the movie. This is Phase one of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM-R) helps to emphasize different objectives such as guiding students to think critically, apply reading strategies in their independent reading.
During Phase 2, Supported Independent Reading, students read independently from self-selected, challenging books of high interest, while the teacher holds conferences with individual students.
Student Self-Choice Activities, is the third phase of SEM-R where students have the opportunity to take the information and skills learned through Phases 1 and 2 and use them to pursue individual interests based on their learning style preferences.
