Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education teacher in an urban district who works with students with a wide variety of mental, emotional, physical, and learning disabilities in a self-contained classroom.
Many of these students will have additional disabilities such as autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs), challenging and/or self-injurious behavior, emotional disturbance, epilepsy, hearing impairment, physical impairment, severe impairment in communication skills and visual impairment.
The students in my room have limited communication skills and will therefore not have control of the multiple means by which other students communicate such as speech, body language, facial expressions and print.
My Project
My students in my classroom would benefit from using a dry erase table as a interactive source of hands on learning that fosters communication and motivates students to learn. This will allow us to utilize these tables during all content areas of instruction and encourages fine motor skills. For example, during math time, students are able to practice math facts/expressions conveniently on their tables and easily erase any mistakes while strengthening their muscle movement. I believe it takes away any discouragement and makes learning fun for kids.
We currently have 3 of these tables which seats 6 kids.
I currently have 10 students in my room, so not every student is placed at a dry erase table at the same time. It would be great to offer this seating to all 10 students because it’s been very beneficial for my student population. The white board tables have increased the student engagement by allowing them to use dry erase markers rather than the repeated traditional method of paper and pencil.
White board tables also have allowed my students to quickly and conveniently practice exercises on the table during instruction. I notice that the students are eager to learn and participate, and that learning has become more of a fun activity. It has increased their attention and engagement during academic learning time.
As for the teacher desks, I have 3 classroom support staff including myself. Due to the limited amount of space in my room because of specialized student equipment, we have to down size on furniture so that it allows students to safely navigate in our environment.
