Our students are from a small, rural community in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Our community has a lower socioeconomic population, with state data showing 57% of the students being economically disadvantaged and 77% of the eligible students participating in free or reduced-price lunch programs, identifying it as a Title I school.
Our attendance averages above 95% daily with only one day this past year below 90%. Our students are dedicated and enthusiastic learners. They react well to research-based instruction that incorporates techniques for teaching students with ADHD, cognitive impairments, autism, and many other personal learning differences.
My goal is to purchase supplies allowing us to support academic and social situations and focus on individual living and life skills. When this project is funded, my students will be able to have additional resources that will allow them to thrive educationally and emotionally in an effort to meet each individual’s personal potential.
My Project
We implemented a K-12 Social Emotional Learning component in our district this year. Recognizing and appreciating those around us increases happiness according to an article from Harvard Health Publishing: Harvard Medical School (April 18, 2019). Showing gratitude and completing acts of kindness increases happiness. This project gathers supplies for students to use when they want to show gratitude.
Students will create and assemble a thank you package for staff members (secretaries, teachers, para-professionals, bus drivers, administration, custodians, and lunchroom workers) who impact them in their daily lives and offer a note of gratitude for a personal interaction that touched their heart during the day.
Through continual interactions we are able to help students who struggle to identify kindness in their lives and help them reflect on a situation where he/she can show gratitude. Students will begin by decorating a white gift bag to put their gift in. A personal note or note card will be included explaining why they are thankful for that person/interaction. They can choose small candy bars, popcorn, the Starfish poem, a thank you pen, and/or sticky notes to include with their gift. Finally, they can choose the 2 colors of tissue paper they want to decorate the gift before delivering it to the recipient. Our goal is to assist students in identifying and understanding acts of kindness and learning to be grateful for those interactions through offering these supplies.
