I am the AVID coordinator at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC. Our primary goal in this program is to get students that are most underrepresented in 4 year universities enrolled in college. My secondary goal is to enroll and support these students in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaurete courses. Most of my students hail from single parent homes, 1st generation college, and/or low socio-economic status. Their parents can not help them with the additional rigor of upper level classes; we must do this in the AVID classroom. In addition to offering tutoring support, we also challenge the students by introducing them to higher level reading. I would like to purchase a class set of Shakespeare's plays to be used as a supplementary text to introduce my students to the arts. I want them to experience a play each year that I teach them, one that is not taught already in high school, in an atmosphere of reading for pleasure - not necessity. I have found that using side-by-side editions helps the students to understand the plot of the story and keeps them motivated throughout the play. It also helps them to become much more comfortable with Shakespearean language, thus supporting the work they are doing in their English classes. Please help me and my team support these students in their quest for academic success. One way or another my students will go to college. You can help make that trip a little easier.
