This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am the Media Specialists for an alternative high school. Students in grades 9-12 are enrolled in our school to earn a high school diploma and move on to a post-secondary opportunity to receive training that will further enhance their marketable skills in the workforce. As a staff, we would like to use the world around us to reach our students, while teaching the fundamentals needed to be successful in college. One way to do this is to help our students develop an appreciation for literature.
I would like to engage my students by working with the English teachers to create a unit about Autobiographies (and Biographies). However, our autobiography section is not relevant. Many of the titles are people who are unknown to our students. The autobiographical section of the school library media center is the one place that neither students nor teachers seem to go. I would like to change that, by providing reading opportunities that pique the interests of our readers!
I would like to start with a small variety of books. This will allow me to focus on stressing the value of autobiographies, while providing students with information about individuals who are currently in the public domain.
By helping to fund this project, you will partner with me to help students realize the value of learning about different people and different ideas. This is an important step to make in understanding how to accept others who may be different, and is essential to helping with the transitioning process (from high school into a college setting).
