Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher of 28 years, but have moved down from fifth to third grade. I have been overjoyed to work with this caring, loving, and enthusiastic group of students. Their backgrounds and abilities vary widely. We are a K-8 school where community is taught and instilled in all grade levels.
Third graders possess a magical fascination with all possibilities, and they are eager to succeed and take chances.
My students have the natural love of learning about the world, sharing ideas, and gathering knowledge. Over half of my students are performing below grade level, and struggle with ADD, ADHD, grief, and learning disabilities. Many come to school with worries and anxiety, and many struggle to fit in. The classroom is where they come to embrace learning. I want all my students to feel welcome and accepted in our classroom.
My Project
My students are in love with Osmo learning activities. Even the most reluctant learners are fully engaged with these academic programs. I currently have 3 Osmo stations and would like to increase the number of students who can participate at the same time.
Osmo kits work with Apple iPads to bring students extremely interactive programs that build critical thinking, logic, coding, math, phonics, and team building skills.
I have seen interest and enthusiasm beyond what a traditional computer program offers. Osmo kits provide manipulatives that interact with the program. It allows students to engage in learning at a much deeper level than simply watching a screen and entering answers on a keyboard. Students rotate through stations with a partner while each program increases in difficulty. Teams of students work together to build academic and social skills.
