Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the most wonderful people that you'll ever meet. They are inventive, inquisitive, funny, sometimes lazy, sometimes disorganized, like any other teen, but always incredibly kind and incredibly eager to help. When the COVID-19 stay at home one of our issues was finding the tools, the means and the drive to continue to learn. I started at my kitchen table, then the basement and finally in an ad hoc office created out of a spare room. I use my old laptop, and yet I am incredibly lucky, compared to my students. Many have no dedicated places for learning like a kitchen table or a particular room or the adequate technology or net access- and while we've improved in that regard through the efforts of our district- we can still do better in addressing motivation and social-emotional skills in this time of crisis. Many of my students and myself rely on our older laptops or chrome-books and many are working to support their families- some even attending our Google Meets from work, on their lunch break. We're trying our best, but we need some help to keep instruction exciting, motivating and enriching.

My Project

The transition to an online learning platform, a video-based student virtual classroom and a shift to a completely digital instruction system has been insanely challenging and has raised numerous issues around the digital divide and equity among students, as well as conversations about educational tech.

For students, the hurdle to overcome has been perhaps the most complicated- spotty access to reliable internet, solid technology to access the net and finally teachers who are tech savvy and who are equipped wit the technology and skill to make the transition to remote learning engaging, appropriate and most importantly successful.

With this project I am aiming to bridge the gap of technology as an educator in need of a solid iPad to facilitate communication and interactive instruction (Google Meets, Live-streams, screen casts, screen whiteboard style lectures) via its touch screen and the digital pencil. It will allow for smooth, seamless access to video conferencing with its build in microphone and headphones, producing digital content like videos and live-streams and providing much needed feedback via its unique ability to use a digital stylus to grade student work on its screen.

With lots of uncertainty in the air, with the anxiety for summer planning for a possible remote earning for the summer semester and even the first semester of the upcoming school year, I am planning ahead and looking forward to being able to remote teach using new, reliable technology that gives my students quality, dependable, engaging and well-produced instruction wherever they are.
