My students are bright Pre-k through 5th graders. Many of them come from homes and communities where accessing communication in their primary language, American Sign Language (ASL), is impossible, creating for them a lack of incidental learning. As a result, they miss out on critical social and emotional education and skills needed to navigate throughout life.
Through Social Emotional Learning groups conducted weekly, I am able to introduce these skills to them at school.
As (ASL) is their primary language, I need the technology to turn my classroom into a visual library where they have access to videos and visual aids to assist them in learning concepts!
With technology such as an apple TV, I would be able to utilize apps, games, and videos online (in ASL) to present topics such as empathy, compassion, and managing emotions by connecting my iPad to a much larger screen for the class to view and discuss together.
Although presentations and group discussions are wonderful ways to share and learn from each other, watching videos, being able to see examples and participate in activities like yoga, square breathing, and mindful meditation with assistance from a large screen allows for the whole class to practice and engage in activities together, better promoting social emotional growth.
