My students live in Las Vegas, Nevada and attend a Title I, Tier III elementary school that is surrounded by high poverty, high crime, and high transiency. My school has a large number of English Language Learners (ELL) and 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch each day. Many students also receive a food bag that helps them get through the weekend. These students attend the only school in Las Vegas where the zoning consists exclusively of apartments and weekly stay motels.
As you can imagine, the 6 hours and 19 minutes my students spend in school each day is an escape from the challenges of their daily lives, where they are asked to grow up more quickly than most children.
Despite these challenges, my students use positive mindsets to accomplish great things in an inviting environment where they feel safe and loved. My students diligently work to increase their knowledge in all academic areas, as well as expand their social and emotional intelligence. If you were to visit our classroom you would see what a new, fun, and welcomed adventure we have together every day!
Technology plays an increasingly important role in our society, and the same is true in the classroom. My students need 2 iPad mini tablets with protective cases and head phones. These iPad minis will allow my students to be engaged in learning in a way they have never experienced. My students will be able to learn through educational applications, digital projects, and QR codes (scannable codes that take you directly to a specific website). The iPads will also allow my ELL students to be engaged with language, reading comprehension, and fluency in a motivating way.
With extremely limited access to technology at home, it is imperative that my students are given the opportunity at school to become technologically literate.
These iPad mini tablets will enhance differentiated learning in all academic areas, foster student engagement, and increase technological literacy. I cannot wait to see what my students will be able to accomplish with these new learning tools.
