My Students

In our school students have a wonderful opportunity to explore engineering and computer science in grades six, seven and eight. We use the engineering design process to plan and create computer programming projects in each grade. In grade six we use Scratch and build artistic and creative projects and games. In grade seven we imagine and build projects with the micro:bit where computing meets the physical world. In grade eight we dive deeper and use MIT App Inventor to build and test Android Apps.

Imagination and creativity inspire us as we use the design process to guide us through our computer programming projects.

My Project

We have just introduced the Project Lead the Way App Creators curriculum to our eighth grade students. It is a great way to move students along the programming pathway and to inspire them and get them ready for the computer science curriculum at the high school. We are learning not just coding concepts but also the engineering design process to help us see how important the user of the computer app is, and how we should consider them first when designing any kind of computer program.

The constructionist teaching style that this PD teaches will help me inspire students to use their creativity and engage them in the entire programming process.
