Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are English Language Learners. They come from many different countries and speak different languages. Being new to the US can be a bit overwhelming with language barriers, so I have found that it is easier for them to express themselves and communicate with art and pictures.
My students come from all over the world and have different levels of English proficiency.
Many of them are brand new to the US and are a bit in shock! I have students who come from Egypt, Somalia, Nigeria, India, Mexico, Guatemala, and countless other countries. We are an inner city school with a very high poverty rate.
My Project
My students need any kind of art material-paints, brushes, construction paper, scissors, glue--anything they can get creative with to express themselves, even tell stories, through pictures and drawings until they can become more proficient in writing and speaking. Our culminating event at our school will be an International Fest where the children can create cultural types of art to display. They can communicate thoughts and ideas about what they have learned in history, science, math, or simply to express feelings, goals and dreams though art.
It is overwhelming to take in a new language: speaking, listening, reading, writing.
Imagine being a child and afraid. To communicate is vital and takes years to become fluent, but communicating through art can be instantaneous.
