Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher in a small community in the Central San Joaquin Valley. Our poverty rate is very high. As a result of this, all of our students receive free breakfast and lunches. Many of our students are second language learners. We work diligently to provide as many experiences and tools as possible to facilitate growth which allows them to meet their grade-level standards.
Students with special needs benefit greatly from products, supplies, and activities that help to facilitate their ability to participate fully in the curriculum.
Some of these items include sports equipment, puzzles to increase their problem-solving abilities, art supplies that let every child create something unique to them alone, fidgets and special seating that help them concentrate, whiteboard markers to show their work, or maybe LEGO or Engino sets that bring out their building and design capabilities.
Our school vision states: Knights collaborate, think critically, and persevere through rigorous, relevant and engaging tasks using multiple strategies and materials.
This is especially critical for students with special needs. Expressing themselves through exercise, art, building a project with Lego Sets, putting together a puzzle, recording their voice, and working as a team.
My Project
My students will be returning to school with the hybrid model. This means that half of the students will return to school, but they may not share any items with their peers or even eat at school. My special education students will be allowed to come to me after spending time with their classroom teacher. In order for them to socialize and eat lunch together, they must be at their own table. I have room outside my classroom to facilitate this. I just don't have access to tables to make this happen.
Life skills like eating with others is an important skill for my students.
The tables will allow us to be together, but apart.
I will also create bags with white boards, markers and erasers that can easily be moved and stored without mixing with the supplies of another student.
