They have the odds stacked against them but they still persevere. I am proud to be their teacher.
Our high school is a Title I school meaning over 80% of our students qualify for free lunch.
I tell them all the time I am lucky because I feel I have the best group of students. My students are serious about being leaders in and out of the classroom. They encourage one another and correct one another if someone is off-track. Many of my students come from poverty-stricken homes, single parent homes, and high crime neighborhoods. People say my students do not care; I couldn’t disagree more. They are human and make mistakes but I am inspired that they are wanting to make an effort every day. I believe so much in my students because they believe in themselves. It is rare to find young people from difficult backgrounds wanting to do better. They are focused and meeting college requirements and bettering themselves as well as the community. My students have donated to veterans and the homeless youth of Jacksonville. I am so proud to call myself their teacher.
In order to receive credit college students must pass the Advanced Placement (AP) exam at the end of the school year. Unfortunately, our school district has suffered a massive budget deficit. The textbooks available are outdated by approximately 15 years. Preparing for this exam is difficult for the students. They are working very hard to earn college credits in their high school years. In order to accomplish these students must pass the end of course exam to receive college credit. This seems nearly impossible with an outdated textbook. The exams are updated and refreshed every year. I feel every student deserves the opportunity to be successful. With a current textbook and flashcards, I am confident students will pass the Advanced Placement exam. Please help our students not only learn but thrive.
