Despite what many think about teenagers' reading habits, I can attest that yes, they do indeed read books! As the teacher librarian at my own alma mater, it is amazing to see how often the Library is used each and every day, and to hear from the many students who request titles to be added to our collection. In fact, I can barely keep up with their requests! This definitely demonstrates how integral our Library and its collection is to our school, and how much it is used by all of our awesome students.
Most of our students come from working-class, immigrant families.
We have a very large population of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch, therefore many of them do not have the funds to just go out and buy books, or they do not have the time or transportation to get to our local public libraries. Thus, our school library is a very important resource for our students. On a typical day, we can have upwards of 50-100 students in the Library at lunch or after school, not to mention during other times of the day.
As the teacher librarian at the same high school in which I roamed the halls as a teenager, I am eager to bring some current Advanced Placement test preparation books to our amazing students, many of whom who do not have the funds to go out and buy these test preparation books for themselves, which can get costly, especially since many of our students take more than one AP class on campus. Some of our students even take 4 or 5 AP classes per year! Providing these current test preparation materials will give our students the materials they need to study for their upcoming Advanced Placement tests in May. Each of these books that I am requesting will go into our Library collection, so that multiple students may benefit from checking them out.
Our Library offers a myriad of resources for our students, and test preparation books are a big part of that.
Since budgets throughout the school and district have been cut this year, we do not have the funds to purchase all of the books that are needed to update our collection. Your donation to this project will help us continue to offer a variety of resources to our students. I am excited to get these test prep books out on display and into the hands of our voracious readers and motivated AP Exam test takers.
