Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the best. I know, everybody says this, but in my case it's true. We live in an ethnically diverse community where many of our students work seasonally to help their families pay the rent. Most of my students have grown up in poverty, and many have endured things at this young age that I can't even begin to understand. They are hardworking, and they are courageous.
It is because of this strength and determination that my students were surprised this year to find out that our town was listed as the poorest city in the state.
They know the socio-economic issues, but they also know how hard their parents work. They were surprised, but they were also disappointed, and when they heard this, they wanted people to know that they plan to change this. My students know the value of hard work and want to prove that our community is more than just what the numbers show. Those are my students, and I am proud to be their teacher.
My Project
The Amsco United States History text is an awesome resource for AP US History. This would become our primary textbook in AP US History. It is inexpensive, complete, and beloved by AP teachers around the country for both of these reasons as well as its accessibility for students.
Our goal is to get more students involved in AP classes without it being cost prohibitive to students and their families.
Many schools have AP students purchase this book themselves as part of the course, but that is not an option for us, as many of our students don't have that financial flexibility.
