Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students at this low-income high school (approx half qualify for free/reduced lunch and we are a minority majority school) are working very hard to qualify for college credit through AP courses and would greatly benefit from these U.S. History review materials.
Students in high school can take Advanced Placement (AP) courses. At the end of the year, they take the AP test in their subject, and if they score a 3 or higher (out of 5) then they can get college credit for the class. Many of our students depend on getting scholarships and loans to afford university and in this way, getting as much credit as they can through high school AP classes can help offset these expenses. In our AP U.S. history class, we are trying to help as many students pass this test, and increase the scores to improve the quality of the credit they get (it varies depending on the quality of the university they attend - e.g. one of our students is applying to MIT, and they may require the student get a 4 or 5 on the exam to qualify to get college credit).
The Review book we are asking for contains a lot of the vital information students need to be successful on the U.S. History AP exam. Most importantly, it is in a great format that helps students sort through the vast amounts of information and focus on organizing the mot pertinent and relevant details, synthesizing it all in an easy to understand manner. They work hard all year reading approx. 1000 pages in their textbook, countless primary sources, face rigorous testing and produce often-amazing projects and works. This book would supplement this very well. Last year students taking this class did slightly better than the national average taking the test, despite the many challenges they face. We would like to see that number increase dramatically and think these materials will help.
As the teacher, I have personally seen this book and believe it could help our great students become even greater, and aid these already highly motivated, very determined, future leaders of our country achieve the success they dream of and long for. Finally, my hope and expectation is not only for students this year, but to utilize the materials for years in the future, benefitting as many students as possible.
