As an AP psychology teacher, it is imperative that I use current technology and resources for demonstrations, multimedia presentations, case studies, and films to create a classroom where students interact with curriculum. We need to think critically every day and current resources inspire this.
The high school I teach at is in a low to middle income suburban neighborhood that is racially diverse.
Most students will be first generation college graduates, however a large percentage of students do not go onto 4 year colleges due to both academic and financial reasons. While our parent body is involved and is committed to student success, students are not exposed to the opportunities provided as more affluent communities. Our school is a safe place where students feel comfortable and generally have good relationships with teachers and staff. They are willing to learn and take risks in the classroom, and want to be successful academically.
My Project
As an AP Psychology teacher, it is imperative that I use technology and current resources in the classroom to access and present information for students to process, dissect, and discuss. Psychology is full of topics and concepts of great interest to students that really come alive through demonstrations, experiments, multimedia presentations, film, case studies, and interactive lectures. With a new Mac laptop I will have the tools to create these things, as well as access to applications such as a 3-D brain and a class participation system. With new speakers and the existing projector I have, I can display anything from the laptop to the screen for the class to see and hear. The films and books are important resources for students to see psychology in action and approach issues with a critical lens.
When I was in high school, taking a psychology elective inspired me to go to college and major in it, which led me to a career in education.
By teaching AP psychology, I am exposing students to a large and important field that is relevant to so many careers. Students will be encouraged to read and write daily, further developing the skills they need for college no matter what class it is.
