Help me give my students 30 copies of Truman Capote’s "In Cold Blood" to read, analyze and discuss the diction, language and syntax for their AP Language and Composition class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach high school students at an underserved public school that believes that students come first. These students are from the surrounding neighborhood. Despite the obstacles that many of them have at home, my students come to school mentally prepared to learn.
The culture my students have built fosters one of learning and seeking more knowledge.
When my students walk into our school and my classroom, they know that they can leave the burdens of their home and social lives at the door. If they are hungry, we will feed them. If they don't have clothes, we will dress them. If they don't have supplies, we will supply them. We want our students' only concern to be education, without worrying about the drugs, violence, and stress of the surrounding environment.
My Project
I have 30 rising Juniors ready to embrace the challenge of taking AP Language and Composition. My students are reading Freakonomics and In Cold Blood over the summer to prepare themselves for this adventure and that is how invested my students have become not only learning. In September these gear students will take AP Language and Composition in High School for a college credit. We are all excited about the challenge, however we NEED additional books to read. This nonfiction text will increase their literary knowledge and prepare them for the test and academic success in college. It is my hope that, with your donations, I will be able to create an interactive 11th Grade and AP Language Curriculum that blends Common Core standards with hands-on, experiential learning so my students can learn and have fun!
